Evangelistic Baptist Church of Christ began on August 21, 1963, when Rev. Dr. Tom J. “T.J.” Roberts organized Evangelistic Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. With 66 charter members, the congregation’s earliest services were held in a lunchroom at North Fifth and High Streets.
As the congregation grew, the church worshiped at 722 North Bath Street before moving to 3122 North Rhode Island Street on January 2, 1966. In 1986, the congregation relocated to its present home at 3129 North Martin Luther King Avenue and adopted the name Evangelistic Baptist Church of Christ.
Born February 16, 1928, in Seminole County, Oklahoma, Dr. Roberts answered his call to ministry in 1952 and was ordained in 1955. A devoted student and teacher of Scripture, he continued his theological education throughout his ministry, earning a Doctor of Theology degree in 1986.
Alongside First Lady Deloria V. Roberts, he helped establish a church family whose history spans generations. Dr. Roberts entered eternal rest on September 10, 2024, leaving a legacy of Faith, biblical teaching, and service.
